Mary Brooks Picken was an author of many books on needlework, sewing and textile arts. She founded the Women's Institute of Domestic Arts and Sciences.
She was born in 1886 and most of her most popular books were published in the early 1920s to the 1940's. A few still remain in print today. Including the One Hour Dress Pattern Book.
Many of her books were described as booklets and were used as a correspondence course for dressmaking offered by the Women's Institute. There were other books that were full-length books and some were written under a pen name.
She was influential on the subject of fashion and believed strongly that women should were only well-fitting clothing.
Mary Brooks Pickens wrote the book called the One Hour Dress which provided detailed instructions for sewing 1925 Vintage Dresses.
